Is Signal blocked in Russia? Yes — how to keep using it
Signal has been blocked in Russia since 9 August 2024. How to keep using it: the built-in censorship circumvention, Signal proxies and a VPN — and what to do about calls.
Quick fix. Signal and its calls work through a VPN that carries UDP. Get Surok in Telegram: 3 days free.
Roskomnadzor restricted Signal on 9 August 2024. Option 1: mobile Signal's Settings → Privacy → Advanced → Censorship circumvention — try it first; desktop lacks it. Option 2: Signal proxies shared by volunteers — short-lived, calls work worse. Option 3: a VPN that works in Russia; calls need UDP; start the VPN before Signal. Signal Desktop needs a VPN in TUN mode — see VPN for PC. Messages stay end-to-end encrypted, so neither the VPN nor the ISP can read them. Calls failing even with a VPN usually means no UDP or a distant server — see calls not working.
