Does TikTok work in Russia in 2026? Why a VPN alone doesn't help

TikTok shows only old videos and a VPN changes nothing. How TikTok detects that you're in Russia and what works on Android and iPhone.

Since March 2022 TikTok itself has limited the service for users in Russia: no new uploads or live streams, and the feed shows only old content. This isn't an ISP block, so DPI workarounds don't help.

In short. TikTok looks at more than your IP: account region, device location and SIM card too. You need a VPN plus non-Russian device signals. Any VPN that works in Russia will do — for example Surok, free for the first days.

Why a VPN alone doesn't help

TikTok combines several signals: IP address, the account's region (fixed at sign-up), device location and region, and the SIM card. If only the IP changes, it still treats you as a user in Russia.

Android

  1. Turn on a VPN with an exit in Germany, Poland or the US.
  2. Use a device without a Russian SIM (a tablet or an old phone on Wi-Fi), or remove the SIM.
  3. Clear the app's data and create a new account with the VPN on.

Modified "TikTok mods" exist, but they're unofficial builds — don't sign in to your main account through them.

iPhone

VPN on, Russian SIM removed or the line disabled, device region changed in Settings → General → Language & Region, and a new account created under those conditions. There's no guarantee: TikTok changes its checks.

Updates

TikTok is still in the Russian App Store and Google Play — update it there, not from random channels.

If the app won't load at all, check that your VPN actually works on our IP page.
