How to set up a VPN on a Samsung or LG TV: four working ways
Samsung and LG TVs have no VPN apps in their stores. Four ways to put the TV behind a VPN — router, PC hotspot, Android box and screen mirroring.
Samsung (Tizen) and LG (webOS) TVs can't install VPN apps, so the VPN has to run on whatever the TV gets its internet from.
Quick fix. The simplest option is an inexpensive Android TV box: a VPN installs on it like on a phone. Surok's Android app works on Android TV — download.
- VPN on the router (Keenetic, OpenWrt). Covers every device; needs a client that supports VLESS, since OpenVPN/WireGuard often fail in Russia. Route only YouTube and blocked services through it.
- Share from a Windows PC. Turn on the VPN in TUN mode, enable Mobile hotspot, allow sharing on the VPN adapter, connect the TV to that Wi-Fi.
- Android TV box on HDMI — install the VPN app and watch on the box.
- Screen mirroring from a phone with the VPN on. Regular casting doesn't work — the TV fetches the video itself; only mirroring does.
Smart DNS won't fix YouTube throttling. A VPN doesn't remove YouTube ads — see YouTube without ads. More: VPN for your TV.
